A German mission to send AWACS surveillance planes to Afghanistan is delayed after Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan refused to allow NATO to fly them through their airspace, an official said today."It is an annoyance," Thomas Raabe, a defence ministry spokesman, told a regular briefing in Berlin.
Germany decided in July to deploy the AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) surveillance planes, which are fitted with long-range radar allowing them to detect other aircraft and prevent mid-air collisions.
