Makin Waves: The Makin Island heads out to sea

The USS Makin Island, star-crossed by 2005's Hurricane Katrina, wiring problems and power plant issues, sailed away Friday morning from Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, where about 2,000 Alabamians work.

Some crew members had been in Pascagoula since 2006. And even the ones who had only been there since April, when the Navy took possession of the amphibious assault ship and the crew moved on board, had made one too many trips to Wal-Mart.
