Russia to deliver nuclear attack submarine to India by year-end

Akula II Class (RS Nerpa - INS Chakra)A Russian shipyard has said it expects to deliver a Schucka-B (NATO: Akula-II) class nuclear-powered attack submarine to the Indian Navy by the end of the year.

The shipyard said it had repaired the damage caused by a mishap onboard the submarine during sea trials in November 2008.

The mishap resulted in 20 sailors and technical staff losing their lives.

  1. Russia's part explanation for the delayed delivery "We are completing the enrolment of trial team" would be causing worry in India's Navy.

    India should expect that Russia is up to the standard of France and the US. The later two have efficient ongoing submarine building and testing programs. Russia's recuitment drive for highly skilled crew seems suspicious.
