Carrier on deck: Navy poised to accept the USS George H.W. Bush

USS George W. Bush (CVN-77)Shards of debris found in two of the George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier's four diesel backup generators have been removed, clearing the way for the Newport News-built ship to be delivered within a week, Navy and Northrop Grumman Corp. officials said this week.

Before the Navy would accept delivery of the carrier, Northrop was required to flush and clean both 400-gallon, lube-oil systems of the generators and run each through four-hour load tests.

Those tests were completed late Tuesday, said Ken Mahler, vice president of Navy programs for the Newport News shipyard, at the Navy League's Sea-Air-Space Exposition outside Washington.
