Carrier on deck: Navy poised to accept the USS George H.W. Bush

Shards of debris found in two of the George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier's four diesel backup generators have been removed, clearing the way for the Newport News-built ship to be delivered within a week, Navy and Northrop Grumman Corp. officials said this week.

Before the Navy would accept delivery of the carrier, Northrop was required to flush and clean both 400-gallon, lube-oil systems of the generators and run each through four-hour load tests.

Those tests were completed late Tuesday, said Ken Mahler, vice president of Navy programs for the Newport News shipyard, at the Navy League's Sea-Air-Space Exposition outside Washington.
