U.S. Navy getting dangerously small

Vallejo has been a Navy town and city since the United States government sent Commodore David G. Farragut USN here to establish a navy yard in 1854. The roots are deep and enduring.

Although the Navy left us in 1996 when the navy yard closed, many Vallejoans have maintained their interest in the Navy and the men and women who sail in the Navy's ships.

A problem has gradually arisen regarding the Navy and its role in our national security. Michael McGrath, president of the Navy League of the United States, headquartered in Arlington, Va., has sounded a warning that the number of ships currently available for our defense is insufficient to carry out the job of defending our country from enemy invasion.
