Navy secretary designates Mayport as carrier base

The Navy has made it official. Mayport Naval Station will become the homeport of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.

U.S. Sens. Mel Martinez and Bill Nelson, both of Florida, said Wednesday that Navy Secretary Donald Winter has signed the document designating Mayport.

In November, the Navy announced that it was in favor of placing a nuclear carrier at Mayport in an attempt to spread out the aircraft carriers. Currently, all the East Coast aircraft carriers are based in Virginia.
