Critics fear MSDF deployment in Somalia could undermine SDF restrictions

The planned deployment of Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) destroyers on an anti-piracy mission off Somalia could undermine the restrictions on deployment of Self-Defense Forces (SDF) overseas, critics say.

It has also raised questions about the pros and cons of applying legislation, which is supposedly aimed at protecting the lives and assets of the Japanese people, to the SDF's overseas mission.

Prime Minister Taro Aso instructed Cabinet ministers on Friday to prepare to deploy MSDF destroyers and personnel on a seaborne policing action in the waters around Somalia, to protect Japanese vessels from pirates under the SDF Law.
