US nuclear sub enters Japanese territory 'without notice'

Japan protested to the United States on Monday after a US nuclear-powered submarine approached the southern island of Okinawa without required prior notice, a Japanese foreign ministry spokesman said.

Deputy Press Secretary Yasuhisa Kawamura also said Japan had asked the United States to prevent a reoccurance of the incident, which took place the day after news that 20 people were killed in an accident on board a Russian nuclear submarine in the Pacific.

"The Japanese government regrets the visit by the Providence without prior notice," Kawamura said, adding that US embassy Deputy Chief of Mission James Zumwalt in reply expressed regret over the incident and explained it was due to miscommunication in the US navy. A US embassy spokesman declined comment.

  1. I wonder if the US sub made an unscheduled visit due to a fault or emergency?

  2. I think not, it was a planned visit. My guess: they have an open dipclear (diplomatic clearance) for their non-nuclear assets to enter the Japanese teritorial waters but they do need to request a dipclear for their nuclear assets. They forgot.
