US Navy cleared to use long-range sonar

The US Supreme Court has ruled that the US Navy can continue to use long-range sonar off the Californian coast, despite claims it is harmful to whales.

The US Navy uses long-range sonar during exercises to look for hostile submarines in the Pacific Ocean.

Environmentalists say the sonar can harm or kill 37 species of marine mammals, including sea lions and endangered blue whales, by interfering with their ability to navigate and communicate.
