Australia’s navy orders two-month Christmas shutdown

Australia’s navy has been ordered on vacation for two months over Christmas, with military chiefs saying the long shutdown is the best way to deal with chronic staff shortages, the government said on Tuesday.

Navy commanders had ordered all ships not on overseas operations to return to port over the traditional holiday period, while docked vessels would be manned by only skeleton staff to maintain on-board security as other staff took leave.

‘These people have been facing an extended period of operational tempo, and it’s just a way of saying thank you and encouraging them to stay in the service rather than leave,’ Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon told state radio.
