“Buongiorno, buongiorno,” the head of the Italian Navy said Tuesday as he stepped onto the pier at the Naval Submarine Base. A chorus of “buongiorno” replies rose in response, since the Italians outnumbered the Americans in the crowd. The 27-man crew of the SMG Salvatore Todaro (S 526) and a group of Italian navy retirees, now living stateside, had gathered to welcome Chief of Naval Staff Adm. Paolo La Rosa to Groton.
This spring, La Rosa decided to send the Todaro to the East Coast of the United States- a move that even surprised the sub's commanding officer, since Italian submarines rarely stray far from their country's coastline.
