Pentagon tells Congress of arms sale to Australia

The Pentagon is proposing the sale to Australia of up to $1.5 billion in missiles, electronic warfare countermeasure equipment and other supplies to support that country's F/A-18E/F fighter aircraft.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a notice to Congress posted on its website on Monday that the principal contractors would include units of Raytheon Co, ITT Corp and Boeing Co, manufacturer of the F/A-18.

The agency said Australia had requested up to 4 AIM-9X Sidewinder Captive Air Training Missiles, 10 AN/ALE-47 Electronic Warfare Countermeasure Systems, 8 AN/ALQ-214 Radio Frequency Countermeasure Systems, and 10 AN/ALR-67(V)3 Electronic Warfare Countermeasure Receiving Sets.

    Why would Australia order AIM-9X training missiles when it uses ASRAAM?
