US urges Nicaragua to destroy missiles

The US has proposed to Nicaragua to provide it with healthcare aid in exchange for the destruction of 657 Soviet-made missiles.

Nicaragua received the missiles from the Soviet Union in the 1980s to fight the American-backed rebels.

The text of an agreement is said to have been prepared by a group sent to Nicaragua by the US Defense Department, which included experts in hospital management, and medical and technical equipment, said the US ambassador to Nicaragua, Paul Triolli on Sunday.
