U.S. Raps Russian Arms Sales to Venezuela

U.S. State Department officials have questioned whether the arms Russia has agreed to sell to Venezuela are in line with that nation's legitimate defense needs.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and officials from Russia's government arms export monopoly, Rosoboronexport, declined comments about the arms deals, signed during Chavez's visit here July 22.

However, Russian media, citing unidentified sources in the defense industry, reported ahead of the visit that Chavez was set to order Tor-M1 anti-aircraft missile systems, Amur-class diesel submarines and Il-76MD military cargo planes, worth between $1 billion and $2 billion.
