Parliament's defence committee approves purchase of three Belgian ships

Bulgarian Parliament's defence committee approved the Cabinet's proposal to buy two refurbished E-71 Wielingen Class frigates along with a refurbished Flower Class minesweeper from Belgium for the needs of the Bulgarian navy, the committee's chairperson Angel Naidenov said on July 24, as quoted by Bulgarian news agency BTA.

The Cabinet asked Parliament to ratify the deal on July 17. The decision came soon after Bulgaria and France revived discussions about a deal for Sofia to buy four corvettes from France’s Armaris.

In a statement, the Cabinet justified its proposal with the fact that after it had taken delivery of the Belgian vessels, it would be able to fulfil the goals it has in the context of Nato collective defence planning.
