4 Wing flies in Exercise Red Flag-Alaska

Six modernized CF-18 fighter aircraft, aircrew and ground crew from 4 Wing Cold Lake, Alta. recently deployed to Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska for Exercise Red Flag-Alaska. The international exercise also included participants from the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia.

“It’s integration with our allies at a very high level,” says Captain Paul “Squish” Umrysh, the Senior Mission Monitor for the CF-18 contingent. “Maple Flag is for the junior wing man. Red Flag-Alaska is geared towards the senior section lead. We really had the opportunity hone our skills and work with some very exciting hardware, like F-22s.” Capt Umrysh also noted that the locale gave the pilots a chance to fly over geography and in an environment that was much different from that at home.
