F-35 on the money as best frontline jet bet

The first stage of the review looked at Australia's air combat requirements in the period from 2010 to 2015 and the feasibility of retaining the F-111 bomber force in service beyond 2010.

Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon accepted the Defence team's findings that the F-111's 2010 retirement date should stand. Keeping them in service for another five years would have cost about $2.3 billion.

The first stage of the review also confirmed the Howard government's controversial $6 billion Super Hornet purchase.
