Visit to Spratlys by Taiwan leader sparks RP warning
Spratly Islands, Taiping
Vietnam has joined the Philippines in warning that Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian’s weekend visit to the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea could spark renewed tensions in the region.
The Philippines expressed serious concerns over the development which could work against the joint efforts of the claimant countries to achieve peace and stability in the region.
In a statement, Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo said Chen’s visit was “lamentable,” more so because the Taiwanese leader landed on Ligao Island (called Taiping by Taiwan), the biggest island being occupied by Philippine forces.
