Poland 'agrees' to US missile defence deal

Poland and the US appear to be closer to a deal that would allow American missile defence interceptors to be hosted on Polish territory.

The long-stalled plan moved forward after Condoleezza Rice, the US Secretary of State, said yesterday that Washington would support modernising Poland's air defences, a key Polish demand for hosting part of a US missile defence system.

The US wants to plant 10 interceptor missiles in Poland and install radar in the Czech Republic as part of a $3.5 billion (£1.7 billion) plan to defend Europe and the US from possible attacks from "rogue states".
