Northrop Grumman unit gets Navy spy-plane contract

The stakes are high -- a more than $1 billion contract -- and Thursday Northrop Grumman Corp's Bethpage unit may have taken a step toward winning that award to build a new spy plane.

The company said it and L-3 Communications Inc. of Manhattan were awarded a $1.25 million Navy contract to study ways to build a new surveillance and reconnaissance plane called the EXP aircraft.

The EPX would replace the Navy's EP-3E aircraft, variants of which have been in service since 1969. The Navy has 16 of the planes currently in service. The planes are loaded with electronic gear used for spy missions. It is unknown how many new planes the Navy wants.
