Lockheed urged to fix JSF program

Development of a new strike fighter for countries including Australia must be improved or its maker risks seeing massive funding siphoned off to pay for other weapons programs, analysts say.

Valued at $US299 billion ($A330 billion) over the 28 years, Lockheed Martin Corp's F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program is the most expensive weapons program in US history, with yearly spending levels set to increase as the fighter jet gears up for full-rate production in the next decade.

The Pentagon is developing versions of the F-35 for the US Air Force, Marine Corps, Navy and for export to up to eight foreign partners, including Australia.
