Fincantieri says FREMM consortium has funding for further 4 naval frigates

Italy's Fincantieri state shipyard said the Italy/France consortium FREMM has Italian state funding to build four more European multi-use naval frigates, after the funding in 2006 for Italy's first two.

The FREMM consortium comprises Italy's Orizzonte Sistemi Navali, which is 51 pct Fincantieri and 49 pct Finmeccanica SpA, and France's shipyard DCNS and Thales. FREMM plans to build 27 frigates.

These will include 'different configurations for the two navies, with 17 for the French and 10 for Italy, with a commitment for Fincantieri production up to 2020,' Fincantieri said.
