Taiwan shows off indigenous Tien Kung missiles base ahead of presidential elections

Taiwan's military opened a base housing its domestically developed Tien Kung (Sky Bow) missiles yesterday, drawing attention to its defense capabilities against rival China ahead of March's presidential election.

The first-time demonstration at the Sanchih base in suburban Taipei featured 20 Tien Kung I and II surface-to-air missiles designed to take out incoming aircraft.

Taiwan and China split amid civil war in 1949. China continues to claim Taiwan as part of its territory, and has threatened to attack the self-ruled, democratic island if it moves to formalize its de facto independence.
