Indonesia and China expand defense ties

Indonesia and China plan to cooperate in manufacturing defense equipment and are looking at other measures to expand military ties, the defense ministers of the two countries said on Wednesday.

Beijing and Jakarta have enjoyed closer ties in recent years, particularly since the fall in 1998 of former Indonesian president Suharto, who was aligned more with the West during the Cold War era, as well as growing business links.

"We expect to cooperate in building defense equipment, especially in transportation. For example, transport planes and ships," Indonesian Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono said after talks with visiting Chinese Defense Minister Cao Gangchuan.
