HyFly Mach 6 Scramjet Missile Test

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.usAnother set of ground testing has been recently completed by the U.S. defense contractor Aerojet for the Hypersonics Flight Demonstration program (HyFly).

The program, one of several ramjet/scramjet based programs supported by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has the ultimate goal of creating a Mach 6 cruise missile with a range of 1100km (690 mile) capable of launching from ships and submarines as well as U.S. aircraft.

The Hypersonics Flight Demonstration program (HyFly) is the first time a scramjet missile engine has been tested with conventional, liquid hydrocarbon fuel, which is non-toxic and safe to carry aboard ships. Ramjet may actually be regarded as the simplest form of a jet engine having no moving parts.
