The much-maligned MiG-21 will make its last sortie on the eastern skies from Tezpur tomorrow, 39 years after the induction of the lean, mean machine heralded the IAF base’s foray into the age of supersonic fighter aircraft. It will be a poignant moment not only for the IAF but also for residents who are more used to the roar of a MiG-21 tearing through azure skies than the leisurely drone of a passenger aircraft.
The air officer commanding in-chief of the Eastern Air Command, Air Marshal P.K. Borbora, will lead the last sortie, defence spokesman Lt Col Narendra Singh said.
