Dutch cancel purchase of Raytheon missiles

The Dutch defense minister today said he has shelved plans to buy 30 of Raytheon Co.’s Tomahawk cruise missiles.

‘‘For the coming four years I do not plan to buy this weapon for the navy,’’ Defense Minister Eimert van Middelkoop told reporters in Brussels. ‘‘I can use the money better elsewhere.’’

The purchase would have cost about $83.96 million and made the Netherlands the third country, after the United States and United Kingdom, to have the missiles.
