Italy Eyes Next Batch of FREMM Frigates

Historians of the defense sector may come to view Italy’s FREMM frigate program as a perfect example of the real reason European generals and admirals like to mount cross-border programs.

Not to share development costs and thus reduce unit spending, nor to build interoperability with allies, but to make it much harder for their politicians to squirm out of providing funding.

Industrial managers here agree that the savings to be had by sharing the FREMM program with Paris are likely to be less than originally thought as each nation chooses different systems and different armaments. France is building 17 frigates and Italy 10.
