Iran Builds Missiles to Project Power Beyond Region, Expert Says

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.usIran is developing ballistic missile capabilities and a new space program in an effort to project its power "well beyond the Middle East," a former Israeli ambassador to the United Nations said Tuesday.

At the same time, Tehran is also expanding its use of regional terrorist groups to destabilize the region, Dore Gold said during a conference call.

If Iran's ambitions were limited to the destruction of arch-enemy Israel, it would settle for the "Shahab 3," which has a range of about 1,300 kilometers (800 miles), Gold said. However, Iran is now proceeding -- with North Korean help -- to develop missiles capable of reaching targets 2,500-3,500 kilometers (1,550-2,170 miles) away.
