Australian Navy hulls may be imported

A plan to build the hulls of two multi-role ships for the Royal Australian Navy in Spain and piggy-back them to Melbourne for completion has been put to defence chiefs.

The $2 billion project would revitalise the Williamstown Dockyard, now running at far less than full capacity since missing out on the $6 billion air-warfare destroyer contract that went to South Australia.

Dockyard owner Tenix, which built the RAN's fleet of Anzac-class frigates, has submitted a joint tender with Spanish shipbuilder Navantia for the twin ships, known as Landing Ships Helicopter Docks, or LHDs.

Should it win the tender, Tenix would have work equal to three Anzac-class frigates.
