30th Anniversary: AWACS at Tinker: Base marks a milestone

Tinker Air Force Base marked a milestone Friday by celebrating the arrival of its first AWACS plane 30 years ago.

It was on March 23, 1977, when the first E-3 Airborne Warning and Control System -- AWACS for short -- was delivered to the sprawling base.

And since that date, Tinker has become the home to nearly all of the Air Force's inventory of AWACS planes.

The Air Force has 33 of the planes, and 28 of them are based at Tinker. The others are located in Okinawa and Alaska.

An AWACS is a militarized version of Boeing's 707 jet- liner.
