The Air Force is partnering with Australia to develop hypersonic technologies that could be used in next-generation weapon systems.
The $54 million agreement, signed Nov. 10, establishes the Hypersonic International Flight Research Experimentation, or HiFIRE, program, which will span six years of basic and applied research. It’s one of the largest such collaborations between the two nations, the Air Force reported.
Hypersonics refers to aircraft that could fly at Mach 5 or faster. The technology has been discussed as a possibility for new cruise missiles and for the Air Force’s future long-range strike plans.
