Splendid prepares for long-term storage

After 25 years of faithful service to the Royal Navy the former HMS Splendid has been decommissioned and is now being prepared for long-term storage.

HMS Splendid was the first British nuclear-powered submarine to fire the Tomahawk missile in anger when deployed on operations off of the former Yugoslavia, and storing her is not just a case of tying her up, locking the hatches and putting a ‘No Entry’ sign on the gangway.

As part of the lay-up process Marine Salvage Unit South, based at HM Naval Base Devonport and part of the Salvage and Marine Operations Integrated Business Unit, was asked to remove the aft stabilisers and part of the rudder. Tim Sutton, a salvage engineer with the unit and the task project manager, explained why it needed to be done:
