Pakistan’s arms for defensive deterrence, says president

JF-17 ThunderPresident General Pervez Musharraf has said that Pakistan’s armed forces are to defend the country and not for aggression.

“We want to use our arms for peace because it is for defensive deterrence, but I would like to clarify here we believe in peace through strength, not peace through weakness,” the president said at the inauguration of the fourth International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) 2006 here.

He said that Pakistan had in the past quantified its requirements for the army, navy and the air force to deter any aggression in conventional areas, but “when the threat grew unconventional we had to rectify the imbalance and therefore we also went unconventional”.
