New New Zealand Navy ship off the docks


Otago - the first of seven new navy patrol ships - has been launched in Melbourne's dockyards where it will be fitted out for delivery.

The launch is part of the New Zealand Defence Force's plan to double the fleet, and at $500 million, the Navy says it is a bargain.

"Around the world other navies can't believe that we're getting seven brand new ships for that amount of money," says Chief of Navy Rear Admiral David Ledson.

With just a lone 25mm gun and no anti-missile defence, Otago is no warship. But its hull is toughened for the ice, making it suitable for tracking illegal fishing in southern waters.

Otago and its twin, Wellington, will free the Navy's two Anzac frigates from these duties, allowing the fleet to range further.
