Navy Reveals: U.S.S. America Sunk

USS America in better timesThe retired aircraft carrier U.S.S. America sits about 320 miles southeast of Ocracoke, North Carolina, and more than three miles below the Atlantic Ocean.

That's according to new information released by the Navy.

The 1,037-foot aircraft carrier became the largest warship ever sunk in May 2005 when the Navy intentionally scuttled the ship in a series of explosive tests that upset some veterans.

Its location had previously been closely guarded, but last month the Navy responded to a Freedom of Information Act request submitted by the U.S.S. America Carrier Veterans Association.
