India, US to increase military cooperation

Top defence officials from India and US Thursday discussed situation in the region particularly in Afghanistan and also decided to scale up military-to-military cooperation to more strategic level.

"The focus of talks was intensive exchange of views on Afghanistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka" a top defence Ministry official said after first day of the two-day meeting of the Indo-US joint Defence Policy Group co-chaired by Defence Secretary Shekhar Dutt and US Under Secretary of Defence for Policy Eric Endleman, PTI reported.

In a new dimension to the annual exercise, Endleman made a detailed presentation on the security scenario in the region between Middle-East and South East Asia with particular focus on Central Asia and Afghanistan. The meeting also discussed strategic issues like cooperation in missile defence, arms sales under Government-to Government basis and military-to-military contacts.
