U.S., Japan plan to deploy Patriot missiles in August

Patriot Missile LaunchJapan and the United States plan to deploy advanced Patriot interceptor missiles as early as this August at two U.S. bases in western Japan, a news report said Thursday, amid concerns over North Korea’s recent missile tests.

Washington and Tokyo plan to deploy 24 Patriot Advanced Capability-3 missile batteries during 2006 — possibly as early as August — at Kadena Air Base and Kadena Ammunition Storage Area on the island of Okinawa, Kyodo News agency reported, citing unidentified government sources.

An additional 600 U.S. troops would also be stationed in Okinawa as part of the deployment, it said. Defense Facilities Administration Agency chief Iwao Kitahara will visit Okinawa on July 20 to explain the deployment plans to Gov. Keiichi Inamine and other local officials, Kyodo said.
