U.S. funds more research on sub propulsion

The United States has awarded a $20 million contract for continued development of a "shaftless" propulsion system for its submarines.

The 18-month pact was awarded to General Dynamics Electric Boat this week as part of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Tango Bravo program, which is seeking technology breakthroughs that will lead to more-compact and less-expensive subs for the 21st Century.

General Dynamics said Electric Boat was selected to build and test a series of small- and large-scale technology demonstration projects.
