Ultra signs £56m laser deal for UK Typhoon

Eurofighter TyphoonDefence firm Ultra Electronics has won a £56m contract from the Ministry of Defence to supply a new targeting system for the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft.

Ultra has acquired the rights to supply and adapt the Litening Pod laser targeting equipment for Britain's Eurofighter Typhoon from Rafael, which designed the product.

The equipment will enable the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft to attack ground targets with greater speed and precision. The Litening Pod will also boost the Eurofighter Typhoons' air-to-air targeting. The equipment will be in use from 2008 and Ultra will maintain and upgrade the equipment for 20 years.

Ultra's chief executive, Douglas Caster, said: "The addition of precision targeting, as well as a ground reconnaissance capability, will significantly enhance the operational capability of the Typhoon."
