Lockheed signs deal with Australia for Aegis on 3 ships

Lockheed Martin has been awarded an $85 million contract to build three Aegis weapon systems for Australia's navy.

Instead of traditional radar antennas that spin to cover 360 degrees, the Aegis system consists of four flat panels that provide ships with 360 degree radar coverage at all times. Aegis is able to track aircraft, missiles, submarines, torpedoes and ships, and can automatically activate missile-based defenses to protect the fleet.

"It is integrated with all the systems on the ship," said Ken Ross, a Lockheed spokesman.
