Helicopter contest may divide Turkish government

After Friday's critical meeting of the country's top defense panel, Ankara looks very close to eventually choosing a manufacturer for scores of attack helicopters it will buy/co-produce for its military. But the final choice may leave scratches and bruises on the fragile relations between the government and the military.

The Defense Industry Executive Committee, chaired by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has short-listed Italy's AgustaWestland, maker of the Mangusta A129 International, and South Africa's Denel, maker of the Rooivalk CSH-2. The move has left two other contenders, Kamov of Russia and EADS subsidiary Eurocopter, outside the competition.

The estimated $1.5-2 billion hybrid contract involves an initial purchase/co-production of 30 platforms, with an eventual target of over 91 helicopter gunships.
