Former President George H. W. Bush gave the order to proceed Saturday when a crane operator lowered a 708-ton island onto the deck of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier bearing his name at Northrop Grumman Newport News.
"David, contact your crane crew, and hoist the island house and bring it to the flight deck," the nation's 41st president told crane operator David Rushing via radio from the flight deck of the last of the Nimitz-class carriers, the CVN 77.
"Copy that, Mr. President," Rushing replied from inside the massive crane.
The island house is the last major structural section of the carrier.
