EU troops in Congo might have to use force

EU troops securing this month's elections in the Congo should be prepared to use force if necessary, the German defence minister has said.

Preparations are in full swing for the EU military mission to the violence-stricken Democratic Republic of Congo, which holds elections on 30 July.

The mission is being carried out at the request of the UN, which in January asked the EU to "make available a deterrent force during the electoral process," with 17,000 UN peacekeepers already deployed in the country.
