USS Cole deploys to Middle East for first time since attacked

What happened in Yemen

The USS Cole is deploying in support of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This is the first time the Cole will head back to the Middle East in almost six years. That is when the guided-missile destroyer was attacked in Yemen, killing 17 sailors.

The USS Cole is leaving as part of the Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group. Also pulling out for the six month deployment Tuesday were the USS Nashville, the Bulkeley, and the Whidbey Island.
