Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., the senior Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee joined the Armed Services Chairman John Warner, R-Va., in introducing an amendment to name aircraft carrier CVN-78 as the U.S.S. GERALD FORD. The amendment is part of the National Defense Authorization Act for the 2007 fiscal year, which the Senate is currently considering.
"We in Michigan have long held Gerry Ford with such affection and esteem," said Sen. Levin. "Naming this new class of nuclear aircraft after President Ford is an appropriate way to honor him. He was deeply respected by people on both sides of the political aisle, and he knew how to pull people together in common causes. He came to be president at time when we needed a healer and needed someone to unify this nation in a time of turmoil, and he succeeded in healing and uniting our nation."
The CVN-78 is the first of a new class of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers for the Navy.
