Israel has been struggling in efforts to procure a modified Joint Strike Fighter from the United States.
Officials and industry sources said the Israeli Defense Ministry has been concerned over U.S. objections to modify the F-35 for the installation of Israeli subsystems and weapons. Over the last year, they said, the ministry's expectations in the JSF were dissipated amid a U.S. denial of Israeli access to the aircraft program.
"We went through a crisis over the last year," Shalom Ben Nathan, the senior procurement officer at the Defense Ministry, said.
Officials said the Pentagon has blocked Israeli efforts to install indigenous systems on the F-35. They said the Israel Air Force has sought to equip the fifth-generation aircraft with Israeli air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles as well as electronic warfare systems, radar and satellite communications.
