Turkey sees no need for NATO operation in Black Sea

Washington seeks to expand NATO's Operation Active Endeavour from Med to region including Black Sea. However, Turkish officials say there's no official request and rules out such an option, saying there's no need for a new initiative in the Black Sea since 3 of its countries -- Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania -- are members of NATO

Although Washington has been seeking to expand NATO's Operation Active Endeavour from the Mediterranean to a region including the Black Sea, Turkish officials are denying that there is any official request from the U.S. and ruled out such an option in the Black Sea.

The U.S. request for expanded NATO activity was made public by Kurt Volker, a high-ranking official of the U.S. State Department who is responsible from European and Eurasian Affairs. He stated during a speech that NATO wants to expand its area of mission by including the Black Sea but added that this request got controversial support from the Black Sea countries.
