U.S. Navy to base most advanced missile defense cruiser in Japan

The U.S. Navy plans to base the Aegis cruiser Shiloh, which has the most advanced capacity to defend against ballistic missiles, in Japan later this year, U.S. Pacific Fleet Commander Adm. Gary Roughead said Tuesday.

Speaking at a luncheon hosted by the Asia Society, Roughead also said that this summer the United States will conduct its biggest naval drills, involving four aircraft carrier strike groups, in the Pacific Ocean in 10 years.

The move comes in line with the greater military presence in the Pacific outlined by the U.S. Defense Department's Quadrennial Defense Review issued earlier this month to set strategies and military posture for the next 20 years.
