The government said today it will being seeking proposals for disposal of the decommissioned frigate HMNZS Canterbury within the next few weeks, a move that should catch the attention of established businesses and entrepreneurs alike.
Defence Minister Phil Goff said the Royal New Zealand Navy will be evaluating the proposals, which he expects to range from cutting the ship up for scrap metal to sinking it as a dive wreck.
"Each proposal will be assessed on its merits, and at this stage no options have been discounted.
"It is anticipated that most responses will come from New Zealand, although some interest from overseas is also likely," Mr Goff said.
